The RepRap is an open source 3D-printer. At CabFabLab we have built the RepRap Mendel.
The current status of the project is that the machine basically works, but not yet perfectly. Some work is needed on finding the right settings and doing adjustments to produce good objects. Possible improvements that it could use are creating a heated bed to prevent warping of the object, building a better and faster extruder, and improving the software to make printing easier or more accurate. As can be found on the RepRap wiki and other places, many RepRap builders have been creating improvements which could be used on this machine.
It would be best if the RepRap will be usable for 3D-prints for FabLab customers. Right now it is just used for printing test objects, it has not printed anything practical. To be able to use it practically, some work on the software has to be done as well to make it easy enough to use. Software exists for this, but quite some knowledge is still needed to use it.
As this project is currently orphaned, we are looking for a volunteer who feels like continuing it. So if you feel like fixing and improving the machine, please let us know.
